Basic accounts
I would not have renewed my paid account had I known what LJ were going to do with basic accounts. I feel dirty now for paying them.

I have not been affected, I think I'm "grandfathered in" or something.

They are just saying, that if you want to start now, you can't have a free account (I think).

You were dirty before this.

personally, i don't get what the big deal is. there aren't any other sites out there without ads. why should they give away accounts? it costs a lot of money to run a site!

The site has been running for years like this and does blogger have adverts?

The only thing that doesn't change is that things change - and that people always freak out about change.

blogger doesn't have ads, but they are owned by google, who has more money than god (but slightly less than microsoft), so they don't have to worry about ad revenue. I'm sure at some point, there will be ads there, too, though.

I'm wholeheartedly in the 'don't care' camp. It doesn't affect me in any way in fact it doesn't affect current users in any way. It only affects new users and, by and large, they'll never know there was a free option in the first place. If LJ had been an ad-funded service when I first signed up it wouldn't have stopped me signing up. Ads on the internet are a way of life - these businesses that provide services do have to make money somehow - and if you want to avoid them it's perfectly possible to do so with a combination of Firefox, Adblock Plus and NoScript.

It sounds like people who already have basic accounts won't be affected. Additionally, http://community.livejournal.com/lj_2008/3846.html
